Perodua Kancil 850cc Converted to 660cc Turbocharge EFI (EF-DET) engine

13 Years this 850cc engine work for my Kancil, Now it's time for "him" to rest..

So I go to the halfcut shop(used autoparts shop) to find suitable engine for my Kancil. Got L200s, L502 and L9/L7 engine. All these engine is EFI-type and turbocharge 660cc with 63hp. But i decide to choose the latest engine..EF-DET (L9/L7) one.

My selection... 660cc Turbocharge engine taken out from Daihatsu Move L9 RS / Coure TR (Look-a-like Perodua Kenari/Kelisa in Malaysia). Complete set with wiring, fuse box and ECU

Power: 47kW / 63hp / 64PS at 6400rpm
Torque: 107Nm / 79lb-ft / 3600
Fuel system : Electronic Fuel Injections
3 cylinder and 12 valve DOHC
RHF3 turbocharger with intercooler

Max standard boost 0.8-0.9 bar

RHF3 Twin Blade Turbocharger. All in standard

Transplant process started. Stock 850cc carburator engine removed from engine bay

Mirian, have you ever seen this guy? He is the one that i trusted for transplant process to my Perodua Kancil from A-X, remaining Y-Z, I will do it by myself later..

Replace wear & tear parts. Timing belt set, oil seals, clutch set and mounting.

EF-DET engine replaced 850cc carb position. The air conditioner set still using stock Perouda Kancil except the compressor, using L9. Car aircond workshop will do this part later.

Wiring in progress.. Can't wait to drive this little monster..

READY!! It's time to drive it home and feel what this engine can do.. But still cannot kepissh kepissh too much yet..let it running 1-2 weeks and exhause work done. Then............hehe. But with manual transmission it is "very hard" to avoid blowoff valve from sneezing. 

A day after checked out from workshop.. more gadjet will be in here after this..

    2. Go to N2 if you want it ready in 3/4days. Labour charge a bit expensive. but if you can wait in 2-3weeks, i suggest you to go to another location. Emart area..but i forgot the workshop name..before he offer me RM1k for installation only..excluding part. I will update the workshop name later..

    1. Base on my knowledge, TWINCAM (twin camsharf)and DOHC (Double Overhead Camsharf) refer to the same thing. This EF-DET (L9) engine if you refer to its spec is DOHC.. so it is a TWINCAM.. am I right?

  3. Nice project done on your car bro. I am getting one for my kancil too. You actually made a right choice for the engine as l9 ef det spec engine is more torquey then the rest of 660cc range in term of standard spec. When you change your timing belt u using original l9 or kenari/kelisa belt? So how the power/pickup so far? :)

    1. Thanks bro.. U also using this engine? I saw label on the box of the timing belt set is " for Kancil L5/VIVA 660). Can use he told me.. About the power, very impressive..I love the G-force very much..
      So far no problem, except the idle during cold start. The RPM will drop to 500 from 2k and will be continue up and down until the engine reached its ideal temp. Any idea?

    2. Not yet use. I m still finding halfcut l9 ef det rs spec for my kancil. So far havent found one yet. For the idling issue can be alot of factor. Try check your idling valve. Might be faulty

  4. hello there..i found ur blog while i was search engine that might fit kancil 850.. is the engine u use is plug n play or u need to adjust the mounting? coz if im not mistaken that is engine for kelisa or kenari right? plus..is it possible if want to fit avy turbo engine into kancil? because as far as i knw it is the most latest technology..

    1. Thanks for visiting my blog.. Yes, this is move(kenari) and coure(kelisa)engine, just plug n play to Kancil and no need to modify the mounting. AVY turbo engine also EF engine, can p&p to Kancil/Kelisa/Kenari.

      So far I never seen any AVY Turbo halfcut or engine at Miri..myb AVY Turbo still new in Japan..

      Easy maintain and get sparepart? of coz Mira L2 Turbo. Not much electronic/sensors but too old. Suggest L9/L7 (EF-DET)engine where you can use (some of it) kelisa/kenari spareparts if you cant find AVY turbo engine.

    4. can i have your suggestion bro?im thinking of spend around 9k for my kancil..it is for all if possible..bodypart l2,interior l5, new absorber (also dont know which 1 to use for support rim and still have comfort) and sport rim 14 with tyre,repaint whole car and also engine transplant..i still confuse want to take which engine,but in my mind dont want to use timing chain model..so which 1 engine is easy for newbie like me? avy turbo is out of my list rite now due to the price, so in my mine l2s, l6, or l9..hope u can guide me..
      * i want good handling, turbo engine, smooth engine.

    5. Wow..RM9k.. You will love your Kancil even more than your new car after this.. L9 turbo 3 pistons(EF-DET) is THE BEST bro, using TIMING BELT. Absober i suggest affordable one, a set of ProRide absober & spring. If you want to feel the power of EF-DET engine, 14inch 5.5-6.5jj rims is the best. Believe me bro, you wont regret with this engine..

      Note: Another version of L9 turbo is JB-DET, which is TIMING CHAIN and 4 pistons..(HARD TO FIND SPAREPART!!)

    7. im now converting into rf-rl twincam. cant get ef-det coz of budget.can i ask u to make instruction to change bov from standard to aftermarket one? and what type bov suitable for low boost engine? i may want the original but first maybe just used cap ayam (fake) coz of budget. and can u plz state cons of using fake bov (if there is cons) thanx a lot bro :)

    9. Standard bov got 3 hose.
      1. Main hose from intercooler pipe to bov (bigger than other)
      2. Breather hose (connected to head cover) A bit smaller than above,
      3. Smallest, vacuum hose connected to the intake/throttle body

      changing into aftermarket bov very easy bro..just ready with hose that suit your new bov & intercooler pipe to replace hose no.1 above. Use back vacuum hose (no.3 above) into you new bov. Now, hose no.2 (breather hose) stand alone with open end right? because aftermarkent bov dont have port for breather hose. Find breather filter (can be found at car accessories/performance shop) to fit into the open end to avoid water/dust come inside. can refer here http://www.lowisslow.com/2013/08/perodua-kancil-ef-det-inside.html (as mine, breather filter just below the intercooler, blue colour).

      most of aftermrket bov such as HKS, GReedy, Trust can be use for low boost engine. Original one recommended. Imitation or "Cap ayam" can be use in short term, but worried it mulfunction when in high boost, where the valve won't open to release extra/unused compressed air. This situation can damage your turbo.

    12. L9 with EF-RL engine? Sorry, I never knew about that..If i'm not mistaken, EF-RL only available for Mira (Trxx). Both engine (ef-det & ef-rl) DOCH 12Valve (3 cylinder), 64hp@47kW.

      Different in torque. EF-RL 105Nm@4000rpm, while EF-DET 107Nm@3600rpm. EF-DET win! haha

Just would like to ask if it is worth to convert a Kelisa 1000cc engine to a EF-DET 660cc turbo. I'm looking for a minor perfomance upgrade as well as a converting manual to an automatic transmission.

      If you ask me if it is worth or not, my answer is YES. upgrade from 56hp (EJ-DE) to 64hp (EF-DET). L7/Coure also use the same engine (EF-DET). Maintenance between 1000cc (n/a) and 660 turbo not much different if you let it (660 turbo) with factory setting.

    1. Hi. New or old model kancil? I think no need to remove the whole dashboard just to change the bulb. Just remove the cd/radio player and you can easily find the bulb's wire (2-wired). twist the bulb holder to the left/right to remove it from dashboard.

  9. hai bro..wanna ask u about the wiring..do u replace all the 850 wiring to L9?..can the l9 wiring connect to 850 meter?example like the indicator light,temperature,rpm,aircond??..and how about ur fuel tank?do u change it to internal/external fuel pump?? or just added a fuel pump(kampung style la).. will the 850 gearbox fit into the l9??..

    1. Only L9 ignition wires are used. Other than that such as gauge, lights, acc still use Kancil. Yes, L9 engine can use 850 meter but the RPM reading maybe sightly different.

      Fuel tank, advised that you use L2/L5 injection fuel tank. I use L5 fuel tank. Gearbox 850 can fit to L9 engine, as mine..

    3. Its ok bro. Should be no problem L9 engine fitted into 850/660 kancil. If you prefer to use hydraulic power Steering, you can only use back the pump and liquid tank. Steering rack you can take from Mira L2. If you prefer an electric power steering (ECU controlled), you can take it out from Mira L5/L6.

    1. not 100% pnp bro, still need re-wiring. I suggest you to use L5 gauge, but you need to change the whole dashboard. So that you can use L5 gauge or the best one L9 gauge. If you don't want to change the whole dashboard, just use gauge from L2 (Injection engine) because L2,L5 and L9 gauge got "Check Engine" indicator. Standard radiator cannot support heat from 12-valve engine (especially turbocharged engine) and can cause engine overheating. Replace it with L2/L5 double layered radiator or buy aftermarket one as mine.

    1. It just the same with other engine. Just do not use mineral oil for turbo engine. Use semi-synthetic oil or if you afford fully-synthetic oil. but for me semi-synthetic just nice. If you do not want extra maintenance cost, just let it with factory setting, do not modified here and there. Take good care of your right foot (very important). Remember that, Daihatsu Japan produce 660 turbocharged engine for the purpose overtaking and climbing-up the hill. Not for racing..

    1. normal driving with low rpm, speed between 80 - 90km/h: RM40 for 310++km. (or RM10 = 80km). If drive aggressively, blow-off valve always sneezing and speed 110-130km/h RM10 = 65-70km only. Its all depends on your right foot..

    3. L9 technology newer than L2. L9 12-valve Twincam and L2 12-valve singlecam. L2 use RHB31 turbocharger (standard boost 0.5-0.6 bar) which is smaller than L9 with RHF3 turbocharger standard boost 0.8-0.9bar.. So,L9 is better..

    7. Sorry very late reply. I assume you mention about AVY RS (turbo). AVY engine use the same code with L9 engine, EF-DET. Same spec, same 64hp. but AVY newer than L9. If you can find AVY, that is the best choice.

      YRV turbo (K3-VET) engine too powerful for our lightweight kancil. You can fit YRV into your kancil. but for drag purpose only.. You will never can drive it on the road. Why? because of different mounting (need to mod mounting) and more than 25% increment of original cubic capacity (cc) allowed as YRV is 1.3cc. You can try endorse, ask for approval from automotive engineering department. But the chances is very low..

  18. Hi Jiken, did you get your modification endorsed by JPJ? Did you get it endorsed by yourself or by the mechanic?
    how much you buy the engine only? I went to KL to buy my halfcut for RM2500 from L9. But then haven't do anything to it. Want to transfer the turbo parts from EF-DET to my kelisa EJ-DE...
    For those asking about Avy turbo engine...I think it's still very new, right?

    By the way, I'm also from Miri.... Staying in Senadin area but most of the time in Labuan :)

    1. Hi..engine change must be endorsed by JPJ, and of cause need inspection by PUSPAKOM first. I ask for runner service to do this, but you can spend the whole day to do it by yourself and save your $$$ a lot. Runner will ask around RM250-350 depend on modification, and below RM100 if you DIY. I bought the engine for RM2500 complete wiring, ecu, gearbox..still like new. most of my friend say expensive..but i put it aside because the engine was in very good condition. just change clutch, timing belt kit & engine oil.

      Bolt-On-Turbo to EJ-DE block with EF-DET part?. Emmm Wasting I think.. If you plan to upgrade ur EJ-DE, why don't you just BOT with better parts & front mount inter-cooler instead. I understand that you want to maintain 1000cc right. I list it down here what you need.
      1. 72mm Nissan March Low comp piston (p&p to EJ-DE block) RM250
      2. Deltafin front mount Inter-cooler (new) RM200 bigger intercooler
      3. TD04L turbo (RM700) bigger turbo
      4. stainless steel intercooler piping RM400
      5.Blow off valve RM200
      6. Exhause custom manifold RM500
      gross total RM2050.. If you use RHF4 turbo (RM350), less than that bro..

      but that's is just my opinion bro.. otherwise, just replace EJ-DE with full set of EF-DET. Again, if you plan to upgrade EF-DET, you need all above except Low Compression piston.. double cost.

      last but not least, EF-DET is a better platform for playing with turbo..

      Yup, AVY turbo still new, lucky for those who own it. AVY turbo halfcut entering our market already...

    3. PS L9 tu boleh guna tangki, hose & pum. Stering rack tak boleh pakai sbb panjang. Cari stering rack Mira L5 yang pakai hydraulic punya. Then maybe mau cari coupling yang sesuai untuk mencantumkan stering rack & stering sharf.

    5. idling aircon x cantik mmg biasa terjadi bila kacuk wiring.. hantar kedai aircon kereta, dorang tau apa nak buat. Biasanya FICD (Fast Idle Control Device) dari toyota boleh membantu.

  22. Why is when im starting at 1st gear my boost reading is 0.5 but when change to 2,3,4,5 gear it boost till 0.7..is it a boostcut??why only on the 1st gear had 0.5?? L9 standard,rhf 3..

    1. I think it is normal. Because you simply accelerate too quickly and build high RPMs so quickly in first gear, and then you shifted to the 2nd gear. That's why the boost cannot reached into its max level. Easy to say that, not enough time tor fully boost.

      My standard L9 rhf3 max boost is 0.9bar. Maybe there was a leak somewhere at the inter-cooler piping or vacuum hose. I am referring to your 0.7 boost..

      p/s: Full boost at 1st gear really make you & ur car crazy..haha. But be aware that, for standard/factory setting car it can cause mechanical problem.

    1. EF-DET L7 & L9 same engine
      Twincam give you more power and should not make any problem.
      Whole halfcut is the best choice.. complete wiring. You can also ask the seller to start the engine and check the engine's conditio before you buy it. Bring along your mechanic if you are not sure what to check.

    1. Susah jga nk ckp mana satu bro..ni semua depend dgn resepi tuner. ada yg suka blok EF, da juga yg suka blok EJ. Blok ED (850) pn favourite juga bro.. tapi kalau aku, aku guna EF-DET punya sbb blok tu mmg utk turbo punya. pasti boleh tahan boost tinggi ckit. Tapi kalau nk maintain 1.0cc tu guna blok EF-DET, kena rebore la kan utk masuk piston 72mm.. sbb piston EF-DET 68mm kalau aku tak silap.

    1. You can easily find it at used autopart dealer. Price around RM500-600 inc labour charge.

  29. Hi Mr Bill,
    I've got a Kancil with the 847cc fuel injected engine. In the UK these cars are called Nippa. I have been trying to find the correct position for the distributor but have no reference marks. There are no markings on belt pulleys to help me. A strobe light is useless without markings. Can you give some idea of how to set the correct spark ignition timing please? Any help would be appreciated.

  31. Bro, im interested to transplant my 660 kancil into l9 ef-det. I found an engine l9 content Turbo with inter-cooler,Gearbox (Automatic Transmission)ECU,Cross-member. Besides those listed things, what should I buy or change for my kancil? Fuel Tank? Dashboard for meters? Need some help over here. Thank you in advance bro

      Tukar exzos extractor to 3-1
      Pakai open pod air cleaner
      Skrg glamor org pakai cyclon. fungsi macam turbo (surbo actually). tapi sejauh mana kebenaran saya x berani jamin. sebab tak pernah pakai.
      Tukar paip ekzos besar sedikit dr asal. minta pendapat kedai ekzos utk saiz yang sesuai.

      kejap je boleh pegi 140.. spark plug dan label besar lupa nk tukar.. hehe..
      skrg rasa mcm nk main turbo la pulak.. mana lg baik pakai turbo kit pada enjin asal ke tukar enjin? dan mana lagi murah?

  35. Tak berapa pasti bro.. dulu pomen aku pernah try sampai 1.8bar.. tapi semua tu settng mesti cantik macam minyak dsb..standard boost rhf3 pada enjin L9 ialah 0.9bar. Kalau naik sampai 1.2bar rasanya masih ok lagi dengan set up standard enjin. lebih dari tu memerlukan engine management, performance fuel pump& juga injector,yang lebih besar cc nya.

  36. Ok.. Mau tanya lg skrg clutch saya pakai masih 660cc standard, perlukah saya tukar racing clutch atau clutch 850cc ?.. Ada kelebihan kah klu saya pasang e-manage di kereta saya? lepas pasang enjin L9 saya punya RPM meter tdk berfunsi coz mekanik ckp sambungan wayar tak sama, (kancil mata bulat) betulkah tu? Tq untuk jawapan semalam..

    1. kalau nak cantik lagi tukar la clutch racing. emanage, klau nak boost tinggi boleh pakai. kalau boost standard, x perlu. kelebihan mmg ada. Untuk RPM tu, mmg wayar tak sama. tapi kebanyakan pomen boleh sambung wayar RPM asal dengan ECU dengan mudah.

    1. Ej-ve can fit to kancil 660. same mounting but not everything esp wiring. 660 gearbox cannot use to ej-ve (1000cc), too much differences of gear ratio. use 1kcc gearbox..

    1. two version of kelisa, 850 & 1000cc. 1000cc kelisa's engine same with kenari.. 1000cc kelisa/kenari engine is the best choice.

Update enjin L9 660cc, sdh general overhaul, intercooler depan sdh, guna RHF4 vf33, clutch lining 850cc, ground wayering, RPM meter ok sdh.. e manage belum pasang lagi... Mau tanya mcm mana setting itu fuel regulator? standard boost 3 - 4 saja normal kah tu?..

Maaf tuan...tumpang tanya...sy br overhaul l2 sy 2 bln lpas..pantang dh habis..sy pakai piston kelisa turbo masih standard..br2 ni lepas rembat bila berhanti dlm idling xdak kepulan asap...tapi bila jln semula ada kepulan asap putih..xpi xlama dlm gear 2 terus hilang...sampai rumah sy rev berkali2 xpi xdak pulak asap putih...yg ada hanya asap hitam dlm kuantiti sedikit..boleh tuan jelaskan kenapa? Sory sb lari topik...tq

Sampai sekarang masalah tu masih ada? piston kelisa bermaksud L2 tu dh oversize 72mm kan. berkemungkinan salah satu valve seal mengalami sedikit kebocoran, ataupun seal pada turbo juga mengalami kebocoran kerana perubahan pada paras compression yang agak tinggi (dari standard L2 ke 72mm). Saya sarankan untuk menukar ke turbo yang lebih besar untuk menampung kapasiti yang dihasilkan oleh piston 72mm tersebut. Walaubagaimanapun, ini hanya pendapat saya dan saya nasihatkan untuk mencari pakar-pakar enjin turbo di kawasan tuan untuk kepastian.

  49. Hi bro, want to ask you, I am thinking of swapping my Viva EJ-DE to the avy rs turbo, when you swap your engine how hard is it to maintain? Like finding oil filter and air filter and all. Also did you use runner for the jpj endorsement? I worry about the hassle of swapping, how was performance for you after swapping? Got any increase in torque?

    1. Hi..
      ok. Emm. Turbo engine almost the same in term of maintenance as long as you let it standard as what you get from half-cut. Oil filter & spare parts you can easily find here (new & used) but i am not sure about air filter. Use at least semi-synthetic engine oil.Never use mineral. Endorsement you can do it by yourself or by runner.

      Performance; Impressive!!. Even though you downgrade into 660t from 1000, still you can feel the power 660t more powerful than 1000cc.

      Ok, now I want you to think something.. why not you just bolt-on-turbo to your stock 1000cc engine. More powerful than 660 turbo. Then you still can maintain your engine number on the registration card. Why i'm saying this because your stock engine is 1000cc and if you use avy rs engine, you about to downgrade it into 660 in the registration card. If you budget to spend RM5-6k on avy rs turbo half-cut plus installation, why not to spend that amount (more than enough) to bolt-on-turbo your 1000cc engine..complete with engine management. you can use top-mount or front-mount intercooler. Still, this is just my opinion bro..take it or leave it. its all up to you.. For your information, my current engine now is EJ-VE 1000cc bolt-on-turbo. no more EF-det. Thanks bro..

    I can see what you mean, I was thinking of bolt-on after I saw the speedworks turbo package for viva though very skeptical when i saw the price.
    How is your bolt-on so far? Reliable in daily driving and traffic? Would love to have some review on the bolt-on, thanks again bro!

    1. Modification depends on your needs bro.. As for mine, still reliable for daily driving even with oversize 73mm piston 1.8bar of boost. Only one thing is because of using racing clutch & double press clutch plate make clutch pedal more harder.. that for drag compatible haha. As for normal mods, still can use standard clutch, standard piston (max 1.1bar of boost), optional engine management and fuel pump (if needed). can save your money.. if you want more boost, change piston, engine management, clutch, fuel pump and maybe turbocharger. still in your budget RM5-6k.

    Read from the net, they say can use avy turbo engine, newer technology compared to l2, or l5
    How about dashboard,? Can fit to kancil?

  53. hi bro, my cousin was thinking of transplanting engine of his problematic kancil 660 (stock standard) to newer engine (he need to either do full overhaul or swap engine, both also cost quite a lot). So if he were to select a budget option that can make the car last longer, L9 is a good choice?
